The Sognefjord is Norway's deepest and longest fjord - and the second longest in the world. You can experience the beautiful fjord by boat from the water side, but mountain hikes in the stunning area are also very popular. You will also find historical sights such as a Viking village and old, beautiful stave churches.

Things to do

Tired of classic hikes? Get on the ice!

One of the most spectacular and exciting activities you can undertake is a guided glacier hike. You can do this on Jostedalsbræen, which is the largest glacier in mainland Europe with an area of more than 480 km2, or on the glacier branches Nigardsbræen and Flatbreen.

Wind in your hair and water under your feet

If you are holidaying in the Sognefjord, you should also take a trip on the fjord itself. There are several good options to choose from. For example, you can take a trip on a fast RIB boat. You can also do the trip in an electrically powered, quiet boat. Or rent kayaks and set your own pace. A trip like this on the Sognefjord is a great and unique experience that you won't find in many other places.

Incredible but true hiking stories

Norway has always been a popular travel destination for hiking enthusiasts. But the areas around the Sognefjord in particular are ideal for hiking. In Utladalen you can experience, among other things, Vettisfossen, Europe's highest unregulated waterfall with a free fall of an impressive 275 m. But there are also many other classic hikes around the Sognefjord with beautiful natural experiences - e.g. in Keipen, Molden and Aurlandsdalen. When you return home from such a trip, there will certainly be many hiking stories to tell.

Viking villages, microbreweries and stave churches

There are plenty of experiences for those interested in history and culture. Take a guided tour of the Viking village of Njardarheim in Gudvangen - an almost true to original copy of a real village where modern Vikings live today. There are also several microbreweries where you can try the local beer or cider. In general, the fjord climate is good for the local food, which makes it particularly aromatic. You shouldn't miss a visit to one of the beautiful, old stave churches. The stave churches are made of wood and the Borgund Stave Church is the best preserved in Norway. However, the Stave Church of Urnes is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is therefore also worth a visit. Both churches were built in the 12th century.

Explore Bergen

Although Bergen is not huge in terms of area or population, it is a fantastic city. The city was formerly Norway's capital and has always been an important trading and shipping city. It can offer many historical and cultural experiences - for example Bryggen, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a wide range of theatres, concerts and festivals. Bergen is therefore absolutely always worth a trip.
